We Are Ready for Freedom of Expression
|
We Are Ready for Freedom of Expression includes online petitions, letter writing campaigns and press releases on new developments in the fight for free expression in China. Follow the count of the number of writers in jail with the countdown toward the Beijing Olympics. Sponsored by American PEN, PEN Canada and Independent Chinese PEN Centres. American PEN's We Are Ready for Freedom of Expression campaign |
PEN American Center was founded in 1922 and is the largest of the 145 PEN centers in 104 countries that together compose International PEN. Today, PEN American Center is comprised of 3,300 professional members who represent the most distinguished writers, translators, and editors in the United States.
The Freedom to Write Program (www.pen.org/freedom) coordinates PEN’s global advocacy efforts to defend writers who are imprisoned, endangered, or persecuted for their work and protect the freedom of the written word wherever it is threatened. The program mobilizes PEN Members and supporters to confront local, national, and regional threats to freedom of expression through a combination of case-based advocacy; a Rapid Action Network (www.pen.org/ran); and issue-based campaigns such as PEN’s “We Are Ready for Freedom of Expression” campaign to free imprisoned writers in China (www.pen.org/china2008).
In addition, PEN’s Campaign for Core Freedoms (www.pen.org/corefreedoms) seeks to reverse threats to free expression and human rights connected with post-9/11 legislation and policies in the United States.
