- The Basque PEN gathers together writers, journalists and translators of Basque language worldwide. Its headquarters is in Bilbao, Bizkaia.
- The Basque PEN was first set up in 1951, and a second time in 1987-90. The Basque PEN center as it is now started its activities in 2004.
- The members of the Basque Center are working in three International PEN Committees: the Writers in Prison Committee (WIPC), the Translation and Linguistic Rights Committee (TaLRC) and the Writers for Peace Committee (WfPC).
- The two main objectives of the Basque PEN are to support literary expression in any language, especially in minority or indigenous languages, and to protect freedom of expression. In this context the Basque PEN has denounced the closure of some newspapers, especially of the only newspaper written in Basque, "Egunkaria".
