When you stand on bare earth in your bare feet
and the lightning whips through you, two ways
at once, they say you are grounded,
and that’s what poetry is: a hot wire.

We Are Ready for Freedom of Expression

About PEN Canada

The centre was established in 1926 and currently has more than 1000 members, and always has between 25 and 30 Honorary Members.

PEN Canada includes in its membership many well-known Canadian writers, including Margaret Atwood, David Cronenberg, Rohinton Mistry, Alice Munro, Michael Ondaatje and Jane Urquhart.

The centre has an active Writers in Prison Committee, and engages regularly in major campaigns, such as Freedom of Expression and Impunity and the current Countdown to the Olympics: We are Ready for Freedom of Expression.

We also work on national censorship issues and have developed an active and expanding Writers in Exile program in partnership with academic and civic institutions across Canada.

Margaret Atwood's quotation is an excerpt from the poem “Sor Juana works in the garden” from The Door by Margaret Atwood © 2007. Published by McClelland & Stewart Ltd. Used with permission of the publisher.
