  • The Croatian P.E.N. Centre was founded in 1927, and its members joined international intellectual forces against the threat of Nazism at the historical P.E.N. Congress in Dubrovnik in 1933.
  • Our centre has organized the world congress of writers in Dubrovnik 1993 and three regional conferences (Split 1997, Zagreb 2001, Pula 2002).
  • Croatian P.E.N, among other activities, organizes the international Literature Live Festival. The idea of Literature Live Festival is closely connected to the new trend in International P.E.N. towards affirming the power of the literary word worldwide.  The Festival features 30 world authors per year and presents their works in interactive, interview-type sessions. Other project segments are: performance, poetry & music, and round-table discussions on different topics promoting the idea of inter-cultural dialogue. Some of the contemporary  writers present at the Festival so far include Herta Müller, Peter Waterhouse, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Pascal Bruckner, Abdellatif Laâbi, Yang Lian, Jack Hirshman, Jo Shapcott, Francine Prose, Mauruzio Cucchi, Willem van Toorn, Tomaž Šalamun, Irvine Welsh, and many others.
