The Cuban PEN Club was founded in Havana, Cuba, during the 1940’s by Jorge Mañach, one of our main philosophers, and its members went progressively into exile in the republican years - including our last President, Dr. Octavio Costa, who was our first Honorary President of the Cuban PEN in Exile. Nowadays, our members live in several countries, among them the USA, Canada, Spain and France, and our President is Armando Alvarez Bravo. Several of our members had suffered political prison for their writings, including our two Vice-Presidents, Angel Cuadra and José Antonio Albertini. We are giving our translation in Castilian Spanish, our mother tongue, and the one we still use in our everyday affairs.
Our PEN Club of Cuban Writers in Exile serves a double purpose: to continue our discussions and events on our literature and culture created in different foreign countries, and to fight fiercely by all democratic means for the return of freedom of expression to our homeland.
We are extremely interested in China, and especially now that our homeland also seems to embrace the idea of developing a “Capitalism within Communism”, where Human Rights are of no importance. By translating the poem of Shi Tao, we would like to express our solidarity to all free Chinese who believe that Freedom will return to their country. We, after almost fifty years, still believe so.
