About English PEN
English PEN was the founding centre of PEN in 1921. It is based in London and currently encompasses England and Wales. It currently has one of International PEN’s largest Writers in Prison Committees, working to safeguard the human rights of writers of conscience around the world through an ongoing programme of monitoring, advocacy and direct aid. It also campaigns on freedom of expression issues when they arise in the United Kingdom.
In addition, English PEN runs a programme called Readers & Writers which sends writers into some of England’s most challenging schools, prisons and community groups, with a focus on working with those outside the mainstream of British society. English PEN’s Writers in Translation Programme expands the horizons of English-speaking readers, writers and publishers by supporting the publication of groundbreaking international literature in translation. Finally, English PEN’s Writers in Public Programme holds public talks, debates and readings throughout the year, bringing writers face to face with readers in a range of settings.
