On April 5, upon arrival of the poem, the Lithuanian translation will be read on Lithuanian Public Radio Channel One, and two Lithuanian Centre members will talk about the poem relay and about the problem of human rights and persecuted writers.
This event was featured on April 4 in the cultural weekly paper "Literatura ir menas".
- Attempts to establish a Lithuanian PEN Centre started in 1926, but it was only in 1989 that the Centre was fully established and accepted into PEN International.
- During the Soviet occupation several Lithuanian émigré writers belonged to the Writers in Exile Centre. In those decades some Lithuanian writers and cultural activists, persecuted by the Soviet authorities, were defended and supported by the Writers in Prison Committee; they were elected honorary members in Western European PEN Centres.
- The Lithuanian PEN is one of the organizers of a significant international annual literary festival: “Druskininkai Poetic Fall”.
- The Centre also organizes regular poetry readings in Vilnius and annually awards the prize for the best literary translation (into Lithuanian) of the year.
- The observance of freedom of expression and other human rights in Lithuanian society, as well as in neighbouring and more remote countries, is an additional focus of attention.
