  • PEN The Netherlands has existed since 1923. The centre has a Writers in Prison Committee (looked after by our board member Job Degenaar).
  • Although promoting literature is also important, our centre is especially concerned with international (lack of) freedom of expression
  • Members of our centre participate in the Rapid Action Network activities of the International Writers in Prison Committee that relate to the Chinese Olympics. They inform about censorship in China  and promote Shi Tao's poem at literary festivals, readings etc.
  • PEN The Netherlands has installed the PEN Emergency Fund (PEF), which serves as direct support for the urgent financial needs of writers in serious circumstances.
  • PEN The Netherlands also organizes literary events in cooperation with PEN Vlaanderen (Belgian Dutch-Speaking PEN Centre). The Dutch translation of the poem "June" is a collaboration between those two PEN Centres.
