Scottish PEN was founded in 1927 by Hugh MacDiarmid and other prominent writers of the time. Its Writers in Prison and Writers in Exile groups are particularly active – the 2008 Writers in Prison conference is being hosted by Scottish PEN in Glasgow, and we are active in the campaign for Edinburgh to become a City of Refuge. We also run translation and women writers events, and collaborate with other literary organisations in Scotland to promote Scottish writing at home and overseas. New members are always welcome.
