Swedish PEN is one of the oldest PEN centres, founded in 1922. It has approximatley 600 members and arranges over 10 seminars and meetings a year.

Swedish PEN annually awards the Tucholsky Prize to a harassed, threatened or exiled author or journalist.

It sponsored the theme, Freedom of Speech, at the Gothenburg Book Fair 2006.
