- Sydney PEN, along with Swiss German PEN and Independent Chinese PEN, is the sponsor and organiser of this PEN Poem Relay on behalf of International PEN.
- Sydney PEN was founded in 1933 by Ethel Turner, Mary Gilmore and Dorothea Mackellar, and is one of three PEN groupings in Australia.

- In 2004 Sydney PEN won the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Award for its work with writers in Australian immigration detention centres.
- Sydney PEN’s activities include public lectures by prominent writers, the publication of anthologies of literary work, supporting literacy and translation and defending freedom of expression in Australia and overseas.
