CHEN Shuqing

Sentence: 4 years in prison plus 1 year’s deprivation of political rights

CHEN ShuqingDissident writer and leading member of the Zhejiang Branch of the banned China Democracy Party (CDP), Chen Shuqing was arrested on September 14, 2006 and charged with “inciting subversion”. Chen’s case has twice been handed back to the police for lack of evidence, but on August 14, 2007 the Intermediate People’s Court in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province, sentenced him to four years in prison and one year’s deprivation of political rights. In the end Chen was convicted for seven sentences in two articles he wrote for the banned magazine of the banned Chinese Democratic Party and five articles written for various overseas publications and websites. On October 29, 2007, the Zhejiang High People’s Court rejected Chen’s appeal without trial. Subsequently, Chen's lawyer Li Jianqiang had his application to renew his license to practice law in Shandong province rejected. Chen is still being held in the Detention Center of Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province.
