HU Jia

Name in Chinese: 胡嘉
Sentence: 3 years, 6 months in prison plus one year's deprivation of political rights
HU JiaFreelance reporter and blogger, civil rights, environmental and AIDS activist, sentenced on April 3, 2008 by the Beijing Municipal No. 1 Intermediate People's Court to 3 years, 6 months in prison plus one year's deprivation of political rights for "inciting subversion of state power". His sentencing hearing lasted 30 minutes. Hu was arrested December 27, 2007 at his home in Beijing, officially charged on January 30, 2008 by the Beijing Municipal People’s Procuratorate, and tried on March 18. He was earlier denied access to his lawyers on the grounds that his case involved "state secrets".
