Geologist and writer, arrested March 13, 2001 along with Xue Wei, Yang Zili, and Zhang Honghai after participating in the New Youth Study Group (新青年学会), an informal gathering of individuals concerned with political and economic inequalities, government corruption and political reform, who used the internet to circulate relevant articles. Jin was finally sentenced on May 28, 2003 to ten years in prison on charges of subversion. He is currently suffering from multiple medical conditions, the causes of which are still unclear.
In an article written for the Washington Post in 2004, Philip P. Pan, describes Jin as “the most outgoing member” of the group. “He was put in charge of distributing members’ essays because he had access to a computer at the Internet firm where he worked.”
The New Youth Study Group “were college kids and recent graduates … who had come to Beijing from the provinces for an education and who enjoyed arguing about what could be done to change China and help its less fortunate.”
According to Pan, when police in China first started to crack down on the New Youth Study Group, they detained Jin Haike several times, “asking about the New Youth Study Group and its ties with the China Democracy Party. They also informed his employer that he was under investigation and tried to persuade him to spy on his friends.”
