LU Gengsong

Writer and human rights activist, arrested on August 24, 2007 after his articles critical of the authorities were published online. Police searched his home and reportedly seized his computer and personal files. His wife was taken in for questioning as a
"criminal suspect" and released three hours later. Lu was formally charged with “inciting subversion of state power” on September 29, 2007, and was tried behind closed doors, by the Hangzhou Intermediate People’s Court on January 22, 2008. He was convicted, and on February 5, 2008 was sentenced to four years in prison and one year’s deprivation of political rights. He is currently being held incommunicado at the Xihu (West Lake) Detention Centre in Hangzhou City. Lu is the author of A History of the Chinese Communist Party Corrupt Officials (2000) and has previously been harassed for his dissident activities. He is known for his reporting on human rights violations and his political commentaries published on the Internet. He is also an active member of the banned China Democracy Party (CDP). Lu Gengsong (pictured right with his wife) is a history graduate from Zhejiang University, and taught at the Zhejiang Higher Professional School of Public Security before being expelled in 1993 because of his pro-democracy activities.
