Sydney Centre

The poem arrives at Sydney PEN Centre in Australia on April 24, 2008, when you will be able to watch video performances of it in Darug, English, French and Spanish and read and listen to the poem in Arrernte.

  • Sydney PEN, along with Swiss German PEN and Independent Chinese PEN, is the sponsor and organiser of this PEN Poem Relay on behalf of International PEN.
  • Sydney PEN was founded in 1933 by Ethel Turner, Mary Gilmore and Dorothea Mackellar, and is one of three PEN groupings in Australia.
  • Prominent members include Nobel Laureate J.M. Coetzee, Tom Keneally, David Malouf, Geraldine Brooks, Frank Moorhouse, Alexis Wright and Helen Garner.
  • In 2004 Sydney PEN won the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Award for its work with writers in Australian immigration detention centres.
  • Sydney PEN’s activities include public lectures by prominent writers, the publication of anthologies of literary work, supporting literacy and translation and defending freedom of expression in Australia and overseas.

Sydney PEN is grateful for the extraordinary contribution made by BarNet in hosting, programming and designing the PEN Poem Relay website and in particular to Jack Moggach for his expertise, wisdom and guidance.
