The Poem

In Afrikaans

Junie

Shi Tao

My ganse lewe

Sal Junie nooit ontglip nie
Junie, toe my hart dood is
Toe my rym verdwyn het
Toe my liefling
In die bloedpoel van romanse gesterf het

Junie, die skroeiende son brand my vel oop

Translated to Afrikaans by Marthinus van Bart, Kaapstad, Republic of South Africa.

Marthinus van Bart ha been a journalist with Die Burger newspaper Cape Town since 1976. He was Cultural Editor for 20 years during which time was honoured with numerous medals etc. heritage conservation journalism and community work. He is the author of two non-fiction books on cultural history. A re-edition of Marthinus van Bart's Songs of the Veld and Other Poems will soon be published. It is a re-edition in facsimile of an anthology dating 1902 on the atrocities committed by the British army in South Africa against the Afrikaner civilians and Rebels during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). "All the poems, published anonymously to protect the poets, were written in English and circulated througout the Anglo-Saxon world to tell the world what was happening in South Africa," says van Bart. "This anthology, however, was banned in SA and has never, till now, been published in this country. Very few people worldwide know about it in these days."
